Bio

Susanna Edwards works in the realm of visual communication, as researcher, speaker, events organiser, creative leader, and educator.

As Course Leader of the MA Graphic Design Online for Falmouth University, Susanna is actively engaged with current and speculative global graphic design practice and working with industry innovators across the breadth of the subject area, all over the world.

Having established a successful global online course in higher education, Edwards is currently interested in developing new approaches and platforms for global online delivery and blended learning, exploring how design can be used for good in the context of global socio-political and cultural contexts, empathic and compassionate approaches to creative leadership, inclusivity, accessibility and diversity within education and industry, creative wellness within education and industry and how online collaboration and learning is embedded into real world contexts in relation to place.

Edwards is currently working on a book proposal for Bloomsbury exploring the future of online and blended education and the future studio. Her educational practice has always bridged links between industry and education.

Studying in her own time to become a qualified yoga teacher, Edwards has ambitions to create new approaches and tools to enable designers of the future with a focus on creativity, wellness and enabling future generations to use design for good and stay well in a time of unprecedented change.

Her belief is that the future of creative practice involves trans-disciplinary collaboration, the integration of wellness and self care into any curriculum or business model and to champion design as a powerful tool for positive change and empowerment for individuals, institutions and industry.

Estuarial Lives, Great Eastern Hotel
“In Dining on Stones, a novel that lurched between the south coast and the A13, I referred to an earlier book called Estuarial Lives. I struggle to explain the genesis of this fictional documentary.
I took the decision that the road would have to be walked. Every Yard of it. Aldgate to the sea: through memory, mess, corruption, dying industries, political scams, satellite shopping cities buried in chalk quarries. The magic lay in acts of recognition and recovery, privileged glimpses into the collaged landscape of futurology [deserted retail palaces] and mountains of scrap metal. Lost Roads and epic schemes” Iain Sinclair 2004

Edwards used extracts of text and created ten pieces of signage displayed at The Great Eastern Hotel. These signs reflect the landscapes encountered by film maker Chris Petit and Sinclair on their journey from Beckton Alp to Shoeburyness in the month of May 2004. Working with materials and techniques such as neon, backlit perspex, sandblasting onto glass, etching onto metal, road signage, metal containers and chalk on blackboard
